There is a lot of debate about how to define the best way to live. In fact, there are different approaches to living that are all based around the same idea: “Self-Awareness.
The idea is that being aware of the big picture about how you are living your life is the best way to be. A person without self-awareness is so focused on the little details that they forget what they’re doing, what they’re looking at, or what they’re trying to accomplish. Conversely, a person with self-awareness has the ability to pause and think about what you’re doing or why you’re doing it.

The difference between a person with self-awareness and a person without self-awareness is that a person with self-awareness is always looking ahead. A person without self-awareness is so focused on not having to stop and think about what youre doing that you forget what youre trying to accomplish. A person with self-awareness is always looking ahead.
This isn’t to say that a person with self-awareness can’t stumble into a few bad habits that prevent them from being aware of what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. In fact, it’s often the case that they can prevent themselves from doing something, but they don’t realize it. The same can be said of people without self-awareness.
Most people with self-awareness will also have a few bad habits. A frequent example of this would be the person who is always looking at the bathroom mirror and trying to figure out what color lipstick she needs. This is something many people with self-awareness will find annoying, but most people without self-awareness will find this to be a necessary evil.
I can only assume that we have a few “self-aware” people on the planet. Which is why I think it’s important to understand why people with self-awareness are so often so damn annoying. Because it is so easy as to blame self-awareness on a person.
The fact is that most people don’t see themselves as self-aware. They think that their self-awareness is something that they have on a screen somewhere that is constantly monitoring them. As far as I can tell, the term “self-awareness” is a misnomer because it implies that we are aware of ourselves. The reality is that we are unaware of ourselves.
That’s true in many ways. There’s no screen you can look at and see yourself. We each have a vast array of internal systems that actually give us some idea of what we are. For example, I can look at a picture of a room and know that I am in there. I can see that I am reading a book. I can listen to a recording and know that I am listening to a voice.
I think that’s what we mean when we say we self-consciously watch our surroundings and that we can see ourselves in them. But we can also get out of the habit of noticing our surroundings. The fact that we are aware of our surroundings is one of the biggest factors in our success as a human being. It isn’t always easy to do, though. A lot of the time we are just unaware of it.
